Our Manor 3-7 October 2022

Welcome to this week's newsletter

If your child is riding their bike to school, please can we implore you to ensure that they are wearing the appropriate headgear and following road safety guidance.

We have had an accident in recent weeks that could have been so much worse, but the student and adults involved were understandably shaken by the event.

Many thanks for your support in this matter.

Have a good weekend.

Lee Towers, Head of School

Parent/carer consultation evenings

You may recall that we recently consulted with parents and carers regarding whether consultation evenings should remain as online events or return to face-to-face appointments. Whilst the outcome of the consultation was not overwhelmingly in favour of either option, over 70% of respondents stated either that they preferred face-to-face events or that they had no preference, with just under 30% of respondents stating that they preferred online appointments. As such we have decided that from this point on we will return to face-to-face events taking place in school.

The first event that this will apply to is the Year 11 Consultation Evening on Thursday 3 November. If your child is a student in Year 11, we will contact you soon with details of how to book appointments for this event.

World Mental Health Day

Monday 10 October is World Mental Health Day. Young Minds - the mental health charity supporting young people’s mental health - is running #HelloYellow again this year to raise awareness of youth mental health issues.

As a school we will be continuing to raise awareness of young people’s mental health through our Wellness curriculum, tutorial sessions and assemblies in the coming weeks and months through our Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy.

We encourage you to get involved by fundraising or donating if possible. If you are interested, please follow this link: #HelloYellow. To donate, scroll down to the bottom of the page and follow the instructions. We would welcome feedback on your journey if you get involved with fundraising - please share your successes with us at enquiries@manor.school.

Primary sports competition

This week we hosted our first primary sports competition for the primary schools in the Nene Education Trust, where we had attendance from St Peters, Park Infants, Windmill, Redwell, Woodford and Newton Road, all donning their football boots and enjoying the afternoon. The competition was made possible by our sports leaders who planned and led the event, doing so professionally and displaying the school values we all hold to highly.

A big thank you and well done therefore goes to: Billie L, Brooke C, Jacob MW, Harvey S, Kirby B, Amelie B, Zoya K, Madeleine H, Jasmine K, Lilia C, Charlie B, Rueben BC, Charlie E, Amelia P, Mia P, Alanna B, Malachy Y, Darcy C, Libby W, Kamran H, Gianluca P, Scarlet R and Hollie W. A special mention also goes to Jack S who was unable to make the event but played an integral part in all the planning.

Pembroke College trip

This week eight of our Year 11 students got the chance to visit Pembroke College, Cambridge. They learned about university life, were given a tour of the college from a current undergraduate, and received advice on post-16 options and university applications.

This trip formed part of our scholars' programme. If you would like to learn more about this programme, please contact Mr Carter, Mrs Mitchell-Bunce or Mr Stephenson.

Help for Households

The government have launched a "Help for Households" campaign to highlight the support that is available to assist with the cost of living crisis. Their website includes information on how to get help with energy bills, childcare costs and more. Click the link below to visit the website.

Year 11 update

Thank you to all of those who attended the Year 11 Pledges Evening. For those that were unable to attend, we will be referring to elements of the evening through social media and editions of this newsletter over the coming weeks.

We shared a 'hit play' motivational video at the beginning of the evening. It can be viewed by clicking here.

We then outlined the Year 11 journey of events:

We shared tips and advice for building a good revision timetable:

  • Start with a blank schedule and then put in the 'non-negotiables' - the things that can't be taken out e.g. school, sports fixtures, part time jobs, babysitting etc.
  • Add in some downtime for you to balance wellbeing and mental health
  • Add in study gaps with specifics e.g. English: read Chapter 1 of J&H, writing post-it notes for key quotes to put on wardrobe

Most revision at this point in Year 11 should be note-making for later use in recall. Key examples for this are the use of flashcards and mindmaps.

Top tips for English:

  • Use the revision guides provided by the school
  • Read the texts again: Jekyll and Hyde, An Inspector Calls and Macbeth
  • Practice writing stamina in writing will be essential

Top tips for maths:

  • Attend maths lessons and sessions with energy
  • Use EEDI platforms for homework (students have been given access already and should ask their teacher if they have lost it)
  • Use the Tassomai platform for retrieval (students have been given access already and should ask their teacher if they have lost it)

Top tips for science:

  • Use the revision guides and personalised learning checklists provided
  • Create mindmaps and flashcards of content
  • Use past papers to revise

We will continue to regularly share tips and advice for Year 11 via the newsletter and social media over the coming weeks and months. In the meantime, this might be a useful video for students and their parents/carers to watch, focusing on the importance of sleep for success in study:
