Our Manor 19-22 April 2022

Welcome to this week's newsletter

Welcome back to the start of the new term.

This week we have focused on our values and the REACH points earned by students. Over 850 REACH points have been awarded this week which is fantastic. Assemblies this week have focused on how Key Stage 3 students have been demonstrating these values, with assemblies for Key Stage 4 and 5 students taking place next week. House competitions will be taking place again this term, and we encourage all students to get involved - details of the first competition can be found later in this newsletter.

Despite only being here for four days, this week has seen plenty of other activity across the school. Thank you to all the families that engaged in Year 8 Consultation Evening on Thursday. Year 11 and 13 have been continuing in their final preparations towards the examination period, which will soon be upon us. Preparations are also already underway for the transition of Year 6 students into 7.

Have a peaceful weekend.

Glenn Martin and Lee Towers, Interim Co-Principals

Consultation Evenings

Thank you to our Year 8 students and their parents/carers for their impressive turnout at the Year 8 Virtual Consultation Evening last night. The feedback received so far has been positive and we look forward to continuing to work on the processes around these as the system use is increased.

We are really keen to understand what is working well with these events and what could be further improved. Please fill out the feedback form to share your views.

The next Virtual Consultation Evening takes place on Thursday 26 May for Year 7. A letter with full booking details will be sent via schoolcomms in advance.

Post-16 destinations and careers support

The vast majority of students in Year 11 have now successfully applied to their next destination. If students are still unsure about their choice of pathways and need additional support & advice, they are welcome to come to Mr Hill's office (opposite the LRC) at break or lunchtime on Mondays, Tuesdays or Wednesdays to discuss their options further. Alternatively, they can make an appointment with Mrs Smedley (lsmedley@manor.school) in main reception.

Tresham college have announced the following open days which also may be of interest:

  • Tuesday 21 June, 5-8pm: Wellingborough campus
  • Wednesday 22 June, 5-8pm: Corby campus
  • Thursday 23 June, 5-8pm: Kettering campus

Students can register for these events via www.bedfordcollegegroup.ac.uk/events

PE house competition

We are running a series of academic house competitions over the next two months, with PE kicking things off with a news report challenge. Each competition lasts for just one week, so students have until Friday 29 April to submit their entries for this first competition.

Full details of the task and how to enter can be downloaded below.

LGBTQI club

From Monday 25 April we will be launching a new club aimed at the queer community (and allies), where they can come together to seek/provide support and ask any questions they may have.

The club will take place every Monday lunch time in Room 39, with all students welcome. Please note that it will be important for those attending to do so with a degree of respect and maturity.

If students have any questions about the club, they should contact Miss Holtman.

Ski trip places available

We have had 2 places become available for the 2023 ski trip to Folgaria, Italy.

If you would like your child to have one of the places then please contact shill@manor.school as soon as possible. Places will be given out on a first come first served basis.

To secure the place we will require payment of the full deposit of £450 plus a £100 instalment, with the next £100 instalment due on 29 April 2022.

E-scooters

Northamptonshire Police have asked the school to share the below flyer on the illegal use of e-scooters. Personal e-scooters can only be used on private land, with police able to seize any e-scooter being used on a public road or footpath.

Ask Bath mentor scheme

The University of Bath are pleased to share Ask Bath, a free, flexible, secure e-mentoring chat service offering students in Years 10-13 short-term academic support, information about university applications and insight into student life, through 1:1 text chat with a trained student e-mentor.

Ask Bath offers instant messaging for students via a secure platform enabling them to connect with an e-mentor whenever and wherever they want via their phone, laptop or computer - giving them access to help and advice from undergraduate students at Bath who have recently studied the same academic subjects, and who can share their experiences of studying, university applications and student life.

Students can join Ask Bath by clicking on the following link:

Medicine conferences

Medic Mentor are hosting a free Insight Into Medicine conference on Saturday 23 April, 2:00-5:30pm. Attendees will hear from three doctors about their careers and day-to-day life in their chosen fields. Gaining insight into a variety of medical perspectives is highly beneficial to both university applications and interviews.

Students can register for the conference via the following link:

They are also hosting a free Get Into Medicine conference on Sunday 24 April, 9:30am-1:30pm. The conference aims to help students prepare for their upcoming exams, UCAS application, personal statements, UCAT and BMAT entrance exams, and university interviews.

Students can register for the conference via the following link:

Students who stay for the entirety of either conference will receive a Certificate of Attendance - a great addition to their UCAS application. They are very welcome to attend both conferences and will receive a certificate for each.

PE notices

As we move into the Summer term, please could I take this opportunity to remind all students of the expectations regarding PE uniform. It is an expectation that all students comply with the rules related to the type of kit they should be wearing, with the primary colour of all kit being navy blue. As most lessons will be taking place outdoors, it is important that students ensure they have suitable sun protection and water. Students will be permitted to wear sun hats but these must be as plain as possible i.e. minimal logos and patterns, and they are advised to bring their own sun cream.

Should a student feel unwell or have a minor injury that may prevent them from participating fully in PE, it is important to note that they are still expected to change for PE and make their teacher aware, who will then take this into consideration when setting tasks. Parents/carers should also send an email to the student's PE teacher to make them aware prior to the lesson, giving details as to how many lessons this will affect.

I would like to thank the vast majority of students who do engage and participate with PE positively, and the parents/carers who positively encourage their children to do so. I look forward to the next term where the focus will be on our summer sports. We hope to see many faces at our extra-curricular clubs both at lunchtimes and after school too!

Adam's Apple

This Easter holiday we delivered our normal action-packed holiday camps to over 60 children, engaging in a range of activities such as sports, mini-medics and Easter Egg Hunts.

This time, we teamed up with ‘Adam's Apple’ in Raunds who kindly donated fruit boxes throughout the two weeks, offering children fresh fruit everyday! Check out their website for more details on all their fresh produce.

Dani Harmer Academy

We are delighted to welcome the academy to Manor Sports and Leisure, as we share the same ethos of community, opportunity and accessability without high costs or contracts.

Pop along to the centre tomorrow between 10:00am-1:30pm to meet Dani herself, check out our facilities, and get moving that little bit sooner!

Free online qualifications

The AIM Group have several free online Level 2 Accredited Courses available to parents/carers to help better understand some key issues around young people's mental health and wellbeing, along with a range of other qualifications that may help with developing their own careers. Some of their most popular subjects available include:

  • Children and Young People's Mental Health
  • Understanding Autism
  • Understanding Behaviour That Challenges in Children
  • Bullying in Children and Young People
  • Special Educational Needs and Disability
  • Adverse Childhood Experiences
  • Mental health first aid and mental health advocacy in the workplace
  • Suicide and self-harm prevention
  • Climate change and environmental challenges

The qualifications are completed within a 6–8-week period - the duration is completely dependent on each learner's ability as to how fast they complete and how many hours it takes. These are not 'short courses' that will take just a few hours to complete. As these are equivalent to a GCSE Grade 4, learners are required to write comprehensive answers for some questions.

No exams or end point assessments are involved - the courses are purely Q&A based (including comprehensive answers) and are available 24/7. Learners can complete as many courses as they like, however it is limited to one course at a time.

The only criteria the learner must meet to be eligible are as follows:

  • Aged 19 or over on or before 31 August 2020
  • Have lived in the UK/EU for 3+ years
  • Not already on a Government funded course (apprenticeship, for example)

If you are interested in undertaking one of these free online courses, then please complete the following link ASAP. This will then allow a representative to contact you and send over the relevant enrolment details.
