Our Manor 11-15 October 2021

Welcome to this week's newsletter

It has been another busy but great week here at Manor, and we've got even more to look forward to next week. On Wednesday it's our first Curriculum Day of the year, which is an opportunity to focus on an aspect of our Work, World and Wellness strands. We have got some outstanding activities planned, and there will also be several external guest speakers visiting the school. We will share in next week's newsletter the activities that students took part in.

Yesterday we had our virtual meet the tutor evening for Year 7, and we hope you found it helpful. If you wish to discuss anything further, please email your child's tutor or specific subject teachers.

It has been great to see so many students representing the school in sports fixtures across a range of activities in district, county and national competitions. Results and upcoming fixtures can be found later on in this newsletter.

Finally, a reminder that we encourage you to continue to take a lateral flow test twice week - we are providing students with additional testing kits to assist with this.

Have a fantastic weekend.

Curriculum Day request

Year 7 have been looking at having a healthy lifestyle in their first WWW rotation. On the upcoming Curriculum Day on Wednesday 20 October, they will be completing a series of physical wellbeing activities. Could you please therefore ensure your child comes to school in their Manor School P.E kit. This will be for the whole day.

Manor Maths Challenges

It's time for another instalment of Mrs Radd's maths blog. This week's challenge is based on calendars, and there's also a video on Fermat's Last Theorem.

Online safety

This week's online safety guide talks through how to set up Apple Guided Access, which restricts an adult's iPhone or iPad to one particular app when a child uses the device, meaning that they can't access anything they shouldn't.

Black History Month

Throughout October, students have been celebrating Black History Month by finding out about influential black writers, sports-people, activists, scientists and inventors during their tutor times.

Did you know, for example, that the inventor of the three-light traffic light was Garrett Morgan in 1923, who witnessed a severe car crash and introduced the ‘amber’ to the ‘red’ and ‘green’ that was in place before? Or that without the mathematical genius Katherine Johnson we may never have heard the words “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”?

On Wednesday 13 October, all students from Year 7 to 11 spent the afternoon learning about the importance of Black History Month in their Work. World. Wellness. lessons: the way our world has improved through different black role models, and ways in which they could act in the future to promote equality.

This is part of a wider drive to ensure that we are truly inclusive in terms of representation of different backgrounds in our curriculum and school life. We, of course, value the different viewpoints of students and parents, so if this is something that you would like to help us in our journey with, please do contact Jon Andrews on jandrews@manor.school.
