Our Manor 4-8 October 2021

Welcome to this week's newsletter

This week we have had our Open Evening for Year 6 students, which not only allowed us to show prospective students what Manor School can offer them, but also functioned as an opportunity to share with our local community our great school. Thank you to all of our students that supported the evening. We have had some incredible feedback from attendees, recognising all the hard work that goes into both organising the event and our day-to-day education and enrichment provision.

One of our clear areas of focus this academic year has been communication. We will shortly be launching a new-look website, we are increasing our use of social media platforms, and also have other plans in place. If there is anything that you think we can do better in terms of communication to parents/carers, please do let us know.

As always, thank you for your continued support. We hope you have a great weekend.

Mr Martin and Mr Towers, Co-Principals

Houses

All students at Manor School are allocated into one of three houses named after native British trees. During the year students take part in house activities through which they will earn house points. These allow students to claim rewards and also to contribute to the annual competition for the House Cup. Each house has its own nominated charity which it supports throughout the year, raising much needed awareness and holding fundraising events. Tutors are very much part of the house system and belong to the same house as their tutees.

This week our Head Students visited tutor groups to inform them all about their house. Information videos on each of the three houses can be found below.

COVID vaccination programme

This week Mr Martin met with Sarah Underwood, our School Nurse, to prepare for the COVID vaccination programme for eligible students at Manor School. We appreciate that there are many questions that could arise in relation to this process and we will therefore be getting in touch with those families whose children are eligible in the next week or two to provide further information and guidance. We have been given notice that our vaccination dates are Monday 15 November and Tuesday 16 November. Further communication about this process will sent to families outside of this newsletter.

Knife arch

Northamptonshire Police have recently launched their '100 Days of Knife Crime Action'. Knife crime is a matter of priority for the Force, and as such this initiative is an essential aspect of the priority work being undertaken.

A crucial part of the 100 Days is educating young people on the dangers of knives and working closer with teachers, social workers and youth groups. As part of this, the Neighbourhood Policing Team will be visiting Manor School with knife arches and wands.

Consultation Evenings - Survey Feedback

Thank you to those parents/carers who participated in the survey around consultation evenings for this academic year. The feedback was positive about both virtual and face to face events, with lots of useful suggestions to consider in how we can make either event have a greater impact on student progress.

As a result of the overall feedback, we have decided that initially consultation evenings will remain virtual, with a view to reviewing this decision for these evenings that will take place from January. This decision reflects both the outcome of the feedback from the consultation and the continued risk of larger gatherings.

The first two consultation evenings for this year take place on:

  • Thursday 4 November for Year 11
  • Thursday 11 November for Year 12 and 13

Parents/carers in these year groups should look out for letters and booking information arriving shortly via SchoolComms.

The remaining events take place on:

  • Thursday 20 January for Year 10
  • Thursday 10 February for Year 9
  • Thursday 24 February for Year 11 and 13
  • Thursday 21 April for Year 8
  • Thursday 26 May for Year 7

As always, we would encourage parents/carers to communicate with the school via form tutors and subject teachers with any questions or concerns about your child's learning.

Year 11 Pledges and Revision Evening

Wednesday 20 October is our first Curriculum Day, when Year 11 students will be focusing on key skills for their revision processes and managing the balance between revision, hard work and the wellbeing challenges that this presents. Throughout the day, students will engage in sessions led by one of our partner organisations, Elevate, who focus on giving strategies for success. We will also complete our annual Pledges Assembly on this day with students, committing to future success and sharing our commitments with them.

In the evening, the Elevate team will then present to parents/carers in the evening, so please save the date if you can. Further information and an invitation to this event will be included in our Year 11 Parents Update that will be sent directly to parents/carers on Wednesday 13 October.

PE kit labelling

Please can parents/carers ensure that all PE kit and uniform is clearly named. We have a pile of lost property in the LRC of PE tops etc but are unable to return them to their owners as they are not named. Any kit that is left in changing rooms at the end of the day is taken to the lost property box in the LRC unless it is named, where it is then taken to students services to return to the student.

Manor Maths Challenges

Inspired by the Sudoku problems that our Open Evening attendees got to try, Mrs Radd has included similar problems in this week's blog where the numbers 1 - 9 can only be used once in a 3 x 3 grid.
