Work & apprenticeships

An apprenticeship is a genuine job and under all circumstances you should be employed from day one. Apprenticeships combine practical training in a job with study. As an apprentice, you will:

  • work alongside experienced staff, earn a wage and holiday pay
  • gain job-specific skills and time for study related to your role (the equivalent of one day a week)

Apprenticeships are available at different levels and specific entry requirements will depend on the role and sector.

  • Intermediate Level 2          (equivalent to 5 GCSE passes)
  • Advanced Level 3               (equivalent to 2 A level passes)
  • Higher Level 4 – 6              (Foundation degree or above)
  • Degree Level 6 – 7             (Bachelors or Masters degree)

The Government provide a vacancy site called Find an apprenticeship. Students can set up alerts so new vacancies are emailed to them. Further information on learning, training and work can be found at:

Year 12&13 preparation for work

A structured programme to assess the most appropriate pathways available is provided and students in Year 12 complete a post-18 intentions form towards the end of the Autumn term. Our programme of Information, Advice & Guidance for the remainder of Year 12 and 13 will help students prepare their work applications into advanced, higher and degree apprenticeships.

Students will be supported by tutors and academic mentors throughout Year 12 and Year 13 to research and support their applications by organising relevant work experience and volunteering opportunities to develop employability skills. Guidance on improving CVs and preparing for interviews is provided together with a full programme of visiting speakers, workshops and trips on a wide range of personal, social, health and careers education themes.

Work experience

All Year 12 students are encouraged to organise appropriate work experience to improve their employability skills, gain experience of the workplace and develop the confidence they need to make the transition from school to university and/or employment. This placement may be organised throughout the academic year by speaking with Miss Collier and agreeing a morning or afternoon each week which matches a student’s private study lessons. If students wish to organise placements of one or two weeks, then the best time to do this in in the final weeks of the summer term (after trial examinations). In addition, placements may be organised during the school holidays to avoid disruption of learning.

Students wishing to complete work experience need to speak to Mrs Smedley for all placements (and Miss Collier if this is a weekly commitment) as soon as possible in order to complete the necessary risk assessments and administration.
