Germany Trip 23 June 2013
26 students from Years 9 and 10 and three members of staff met at Manor School at 05.45am on Sunday 23rd June for an early morning start for the annual German trip.
The students travelled to Germany via the Channel Tunnel and arrived at their hotel in Cologne early in the evening. Having checked into their rooms, they enjoyed a typical German meal at the hotel.
On Monday the day started with a boat trip along the river Rhine and then there was a chance to visit Cologne Cathedral and go up the tower for a spectacular view of the city. After lunch students were then able to explore the pedestrianized area in small groups.
Tuesday morning saw a visit to Cologne Chocolate Factory and then the History of German Sports Museum. After the visit to the museum the group travelled to the historic Roman town of Aachen by coach.
Wednesday was the highlight of the trip for many students as the students visited Phantasialand – the German equivalent of Alton Towers – and went on a range of rides. There was also the chance to visit a variety of spectacular shows during the day.
The final evening was spent back at the hotel where there was a student talent contest which saw dance routines, a short play and magic tricks performed by a range of students.
The group returned on Thursday and because the return route was different to the outward journey students had the experience of being in five countries in one day – Germany, Holland, Belgium, France and England.
This was a very successful trip and the behaviour of the group was excellent at all times. It was good for staff to see students trying to communicate in German in many different situations.
Now that they are back at school, some students are already putting together presentations about their five days in Germany that they want to share with their teaching groups.
The students were accompanied by Mr Brooks, Miss Weatherhog and Miss Collier.
Bugsy Malone Production June 2013
The challenge of following last summer's musical spectacular, The Wiz, was not an easy one. This year was a step into the unknown for many students. Preparation began in November but judging by the rapturous applause on the first night, the preparation paid off.
Principal Mrs Brooks immediately thanked everyone who was involved including those behind the scenes. Many members of the audience consisting of parents, students, teachers, councillors and local residents praised the group of nearly 60 students, commenting that "it wouldn't look out of place in the West End!"
The dancers ranged from Year 7 through to Year 9 showcasing the impressive ability in dance at Manor. The Little Big Band performed to their usual high standard with a guest performance from Vice Principal Mr Sanchez on the guitar.
The older students were all excellent role models for the younger students supporting their peers and taking a leadership role ensuring each act was performed to the best of their ability.
Mr Carter, Director, commented "I have been overwhelmed by the students' professionalism and maturity, their commitment has been simply outstanding!"
